Mainland vs Free Zone in UAE: Which Option Is Right for Your Business
One of the most common questions from entrepreneurs considering a UAE company is: “Should I set up on the mainland or in a free zone?” Both have compelling advantages — and the right choice depends entirely on your business model, target market, and long-term goals.
What Is a Mainland Company?
A mainland company is licensed by the Department of Economic Development (DED) and can operate anywhere in the UAE and conduct business directly with the local market. Since the landmark 2021 Foreign Direct Investment Law, 100% foreign ownership is permitted for most commercial activities without requiring a UAE national shareholder.
What Is a Free Zone Company?
Free zones are designated economic areas with their own regulatory frameworks. There are 40+ free zones across the UAE, each catering to specific industries (DMCC for commodities, Dubai Internet City for tech, JAFZA for logistics, etc.). Free zone companies have always offered 100% foreign ownership.
